Abstract
Gogol is above all considered as an original thinker, as an analyst of Russian culture and Russian soul. The contradictory nature of his creative work is revealed, caused by the author's inner schism between Traditionalism and Modernism, between his identities of the writer and the preacher. In this perspective the stages of Gogol's path are identified, the rejection of the writer's mission being the tragical final of this path.
