Abstract
By using Vernadsky as a case-study subject the paper analyses complex evolution of the scholar's values and ideas in a totalitarian regime. A combination of intellectual, social, political, economic and psychological factors is explored that prompted some prominent scholars to collaborate with the authorities in order to retain opportunities for conducting research in fundamental sciences.
