Abstract
Two cultures of knowledge in the history of science and society: ontological basis and methodological consequences. Arguing from the perspective of sociology of science, the authors analyse the coexistence within the scientific tradition of two cultures of knowledge - natural scientific and humanistic -with their corresponding styles of thought, different systems of values, and ontological assumptions. The article discusses ontological grounds for such a division as well as its social and methodological consequences, in particular for the history of science.
