Abstract
This article examines the life and scientific activities of I. S. Mustafin, chemist and professor at the Saratov State University, and the author of more than three hundred scientific publications in organic, analytical, physical, and geological chemistry, the theory of the origins of oil, as well as philosophy, pedagogy, and the history of science. In his early works, Mustafin proved for the first time the possibility of the synthesis of organic substances in the earth’s early atmosphere, which provided the first evidence in favor of A. I. Oparin’s theory of the chemical evolution of life. Similar works by Stanley Lloyd Miller and Harold C. Urey only appeared ten years later. Unfortunately, his researches were interrupted in 1937, when Mustafin was expelled from the Communist party and from the university because of his refusal to renounce his persecuted teacher, N. A. Orlov. Only in 1945, after the victory in World War II, could he return to science and teaching. In the postwar period, he completely changed the direction of his work and concentrated on problems of the utilization of organic reagents in chemical analysis.
