Abstract
The paper concerns courtesan and geisha in traditional Japan culture. It discovers the Shinto influence on aesthetisation of selling love, the distinction between Japan and European beauty ideal (in particular, indifference to woman face), the symbolism of courtesans dress, its evolution and contrasting to geishas dress. The separate chapter is concern courtesans in Zen philosophy and the legend about Ikkyu and Zigokutayu. The paper is illustrated with photos of kimono and ukiyoe (private collection of the author).
