- Abstract
- The role of Foundling hospitals in Russia in counteracting infanticide and abandoning babies at a door is considered. A special attention is paid to the activity by I.I. Betskoy, a prominent statesman and Public figure of Ekaterina II epoch. He did a lot to consolidate practice of secret adoption of babies to such institutes that was established by Peter I in his time. That practice that was current in Russia for almost two centuries was quite in keeping with the idea of Christian compassion but, on the other hand, it promoted parents' social irresponsibility and was changing public attitude towards infanticide that to a large degree prepared made the ground for abortion legitimization in 1920.
